5 principles for mobile-first surveys

In today’s mobile dominated world, it’s essential for these devices to be at the forefront of your survey designs.

Here are five mobile-first design principles drawn from years of research on how to optimize your research for today’s multi-device customer.

Make it big

Use big buttons to ensure the response
selection area is large enough for easy touch-screen input.

Increase font size so the question is readable on the small screen.

Cut the clutter

Simplify the content on each screen by stripping out unnecessary graphics.

Use interactive questions that show one item at a time instead of matrix grids.

Swipe and touch tap

Limit point and click, drag and drop, and
typing on a mobile device as these can be challenging on the small screen.

Use mobile first touch tapping and swiping actions.

Survey length

Shorter is better, particularly for mobile-survey takers.

Keep surveys to 15 minutes or less.

Test and re-test

Take the survey as a participant on a number of devices and browsers. If the
experience isn’t good for you, it won’t be for the participant!
